Introduction
This is a Quick Set-up guide for configuring a PortMaster 2TM
to connect to your network. If you purchased your portmaster from
PORTMASTERS.COM, it comes preconfigured with the primary IP address of 10.0.0.201
and a subinterface address of 192.168.1.1). You can temporarily add or change the IP of a
PC connected to the same network as the portmaster to something in the same
range such as 192.168.1.2 in order to use Telnet (or PMVISION found at
ftp.portmasters.com/pub/le/software/java/pmvision112.zip) to configure the
portmaster via the ethernet port and TCP/IP. If the ip address is not known, or
you are unable to access the portmaster via TCP/IP, follow the confuration
instructions below.
Physical Inspection
IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU POWER ON THE UNIT!!! Remove the screw on the back
and remove the cover by sliding it forward. Make sure the RAM and the daughter
card in the case of a pm25 is properly seated. The PM25 serial port card has a
tendency to come loose in shipping. Reseat any loose ram or daughter cards
and replace the cover. Hardware information can be found at
http://portmasters.com/tech/docs/hwpm/Overview1.fm.html
Configuration
You will need a terminal or a PC with a terminal program such as
Hyperterm, set it to 9600-N-8-1 and xon-xoff flow control
Connect a null-modem cable to the terminal or PC. Connect the other end of the
cable to S0 or C0 on the portmaster (NOT P0). It is a db-25 female
port. You can make one with the following minimum pin configuration. A more
complete cable pinout with hardware flow control is found at:
http://portmasters.com/tech/docs/hwpm/CableSpecs.fm.html#18009
Portmaster DB-25 | RS-232 DB-25 |
PC DB-9 |
2 TXD | 3 RXD | 2 RXD |
3 RXD | 2 TXD | 3 TXD |
7 GND | 7 GND | 5 GND |
Connect the other end of the cable to S0 or C0 on the portmaster (NOT P0). It is a db-25 female port. Make sure that DIP SWITCH 1 is up putting this port in CONSOLE mode (9600 bps n-8-1, xon/xoff flow control). Dip switch 2 needs to be down. If up, it will try to NETBOOT. Dip switch 3 is unused and remains down. 4 and 5 up indicated 10-base-T. More detailed instructions can be found at http://portmasters.com/tech/docs/hwpm/Install.fm.html
Turn on the power, and after 30 secs you should see a "login:" prompt. If you
see nothing or you never reach a login prompt, please contact
support@portmasters.com
Login as "!root". Press ENTER for the password. There is no factory or
default password; however, if there is a password and you don't know it, you
will need to get a password override. Follow these instructions:
http://portmasters.com/override.html
Type the following commands after you've logged in:
set password <your desired password> (no default)
set address <the address you wish to assign to the ethernet port:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx>
set netmask <your local network's netmask> (the default is
255.255.255.0)
save all
reset nic
Connect an ethernet cable from your network to the ethernet port of the unit.
Dip switch 4 and 5 up indicate Twisted Pair; both down for COAX. You should now
be able to ping and telnet to the unit.
Use Telnet or download PMVISION (pmvision112.zip) from
ftp://ftp.portmasters.com/pub/le/software/java to further configure and
monitor your portmaster.
