Once upon a time Jake Messinger shaped the electrons to say...
>1. All 4 cards would be homogenius in a 48 port configuration.

I say run 5x10 anyway.

>2. Customers of the E units could then use the Sync T1 cards. Right now,

Nope. Each 'row' on a PM-3 has *32* TDM slots. In other words, you CANNOT
put 3x12 cards - that's 36. The best you can do is 2x10 + 12, or 32.
So it is simply not possible to run a 5x12 config - the backplane was not
designed for it. If you could jump all the way to 16, and with the
smaller DSPs as in the PM4, perhaps this is possible, then you could
run 4x16 for E1 and 3x16 for T1. Of course, if the 4 port model happens
you'll need 6x16 for T1 - and a 6x20 for E1.

>3. E1 will supposedly be available soon in the USA.

I'll believe it when I see it. This has been vaporware for a long time.

>4. Ascend has 12 and 16 modem cards. They are perceived to have higher
>density (and they do).

They also have a 4 port box, the MAX6000. They have to have 16 modem
cards for T1 - 6x16. They're supposed to have a 20 modem card for E1.

The MAX4000 can only run 4x16 - it cannot take 6 of those cards. It can
do 6x12, but performace blows.

A 12 modem card would only be useful for T1 - 4x12. But if the 4-port
system happens, it wouldn't be dense enough. Going to 16 would make
more sense, as it would be useful for todays 2T1 AND 2E1 chassis, AND
useful for a 4T1 chassis.
