(PM) No answers!

Yup! I had the same problem when I got my first PM3. I had 3 8-modem
cards (total 24 modems) with a CT1 (24 channels). It wasn't long before
I realized I was getting dead air. A closer inspection revealed that
one of the modems was bad. It would initially come up as "READY", but
after taking one call, it would go "DOWN". I called Lucent the next
day. They did some troubleshooting and found that it was indeed a bad
modem. They overnighted a replacement to me. In the meantime, I called
the telco and had them busy out one of the 24 channels. That took care
of the problem. It seems that the PM3 does not send a "busy" back to
the telco when you "set mx off". It just turns that modem off so that
it will not take calls. As a result, the telco keeps trying to send you
calls, but there's no modem to answer them. If you have more modems
than you have channels, it's not a problem because calls that would have
gone to the bad modem will just be sent to one of the extra modems
instead.

Needless to say, I realized at that point, the importance of having more
modems than you have channels. When I recently ordered a second CT1, I
ordered two 10-modem cards and an 8-modem card. this should give me 4
additional modems to back things up in case of modem failures.

I have PM3s using channelized T1s. I am experiencing, to often
to ignore,
problems where a customer will dial in and get no answer. It ill just
remain silent, not even a ring. I have plenty of lines ready to except
the
calls. I see them close to fill up every night. But this problem
happens
anytime during the day and I have PM3s available. Could this be a telco
issue, or are the PM3s just not answering?

I am also finding 2 portmasters with a bad modem. I have put in
"set m32
off" to busy the bad ones out (neither of them are m32, I am just using
this one as an example), will that cause the issue in the first
paragraph?

Thank you ahead of time for your help!!
