Note that you CAN use 2.2.x (and possibly earlier 2.x'en) with >8 char if
you're not afraid to do some big compiles. We track the 2.2 branch here
for most machines, and we run with 16 char usernames. You have to adjust
a few constants in a few header files, and remake the world (in less than
7 days, no less).
