QUite possibly. If there is a disagreement in V.42bis it can cause packets
to be retransmitted. Also, it tends to reduce latency (but also overall
throughput) when not using V.42bis with some modems.

Also, some USR modems had a V.42 bug which causes some major connection
problems.
