(PM) DLCI on primary and subint

Do primary and subinterface DLCI's have to be unique i.e.
Primary : 16 192.168.1.1
Subint : 17 192.168.2.1

or can I have 16's on each i.e.
Primary : 16 192.168.1.1
Subint : 16 192.168.2.1

I'm assuming they have to be unique.
