I think you'd be surprised how fast Java is when run stand-alone. If you
stick it in a browser, sure it's slow... so is everything else. If you
run the JRE by itself, it's actually quite fast.

Amber really cooks for me. It all depends on what you're running it on.
I've run it on a P150 under Windows NT and it's pretty quick. It lags a
bit on the Sun IPX, but so does everything else.
