For some evidence to the contrary, see the transfer rate graphs
posted by one of our users:
http://www.park-avenue.com/transfer/transfer.html

That URL shows graphs of the download performance of his LT Win Modem
operating in both K56Flex and V.90 modes, when connected at 46000 and
46666 respectively. His graphs show download speeds holding
continuously above 5500 B/sec for both protocols. For scale, 46000
bps works out to 5750 B/sec.

He also shows _upload_ speeds of 3500+ B/sec, sustained average.

Our radius logs show his 46000 K56Flex session both connecting and
disconnecting at 46000. The log says the V.90 session started at
46666 and ended at 45333.

Tuck this away: to make an LT Win Modem use V.90 instead of flex, use
ATS38=0 ... assuming you have a V.90 driver, of course.
