Re: (PM) Win 3.1 problems after 3.7.2c3

Winsock is a network patch, on a time-slice almost multi-tasking operating
system, Win3.1, patched onto a single-tasking operating system (DOS).
This worked fairly well when 9600 and 14400 were the standard modem
speeds. Now we are asking Winsock to handle 28,800 and 33.6 and 56kflex
data transfer rates. Most likely running on a 486 33 with a less than
wonderful serial driver, comm.drv on usually less than wonderful (tm)
serial ports, running in 4 megs of memory (or 8).
And with Ms-office loaded on startup. With a fragmented drive with
the swap-file set to temporary. Or on a double_Spaced drive.

Now we get nearly everything our of the phone lines that is possible, as
far as throughput. And we wonder why when a new itineration of ComOS
that is tweaked and pumped a bit more, breaks things.

Those little packets need to get reassembled in the right order for
this to work at all.

I am amazed it works as well as it does.

Here is my wish list:

Wouldn't it be great to have a small software upgrade to Winsock or Win95
DUN that would try to optimize the user end to get more out of that end
the connection?

Or a little bit of code that would check all the little details, NetBeui,
MTU, multiple instances of tcp-ip in Win95 networking, V.42 dictionary
mismatches, or software stac that would run on Win3.1 and 95, maybe as
a system extension on the mac, on system 8 and 7.X. It sure was not the
Plus+ Pack from MicroSoft.

Include a system diagnostic that could benchmark throughput, log the
system changes and report back on how it is doing. Might even be able
to use push technology to update the drivers? Or maybe update the error
messages to be a little more intelligent?

Hmmmm,

Jeff Northon
