No protocol is limited to 53K... X2s limitation comes needing more power
to get the 56K bandwidth, then old FCC regulations allow. Well, actually
its a db limit, and it to prevent cross-talk in the TelCo trunking... (I
may not be absolutely correct, but someone will correct this.. ;)

56K is now a limitation due to Telco switches which currently transmit at
56K over their digital lines..
