I really like the PlainTree Systems switches we have. They used to be
(maybe still are) an OEM for Xyplex, which is how I found out about them.
They aren't very well known but their equipment is very impressive. They
are a Canadian company and populated with ex-Nortel folks. I have had
very good support from them and the equipment has been rock solid.

If you do some research on switched ethernet, you're going to find some
dirty little secrets about how some manufacturers handle high loads. The
cheaper switches use cheaper methodologies that don't give you the
performance you think you are getting under heavy load. If Plaintree says
they can do a billion packets per second on all ports, you can bet that
they can really do it. I am finding an inverse correlation between
marketing effort/name recognition and hardware performance. There seems to
be some clustering around the letter C.

A caveat: My requirements are a little different because of our
environment. I require switches with FDDI support for most applications.
This means that I tend to ignore quite a few manufacturers, particularly
lower end ones, that might be suitable for your application.
