First, we had two ports that were getting a load of framing errors. We
believe that most of the failed connections with the "unable to negotiate a
compatible set of protocols" came from these ports. We had been using the
recommended modem initialization string for USR Sportsters from the PM
documentation. Someone suggested we try this string:
"at&f1&c1&d2s0=1s2=128s10=20s13.0=1&w0\r^OK"
&f1&c1&d2 - hardware flow control, normal DCD and DTR ops
s13.0=1 - special bit so that the modem resets when dtr drops.
s2=128 disables the escape sequence.
s10=20 - wait 2 seconds with out the carrier on the telco line before
dropping the call.
After setting our modem configuration using this string, all those "pesky
DUN problems" seem to have gone away. The framing errors on those two
ports have also stopped.
So, maybe this wasn't just a Portmaster issue after all...
