Fix for 14.4 users connecting at 1200bps to K56 modems?

Has anyone found a good fix for the 14.4kbps modem users who connect to
the PM3 k56 modems at 1200bps? I'll share the workaround we've found,
ugly though it is: Add X1 to the init string, and put four commas after
the phone number. The idea is to delay the modem from training until the
V.8bis (is that what it is?) sqiggley tone has passed so it will start
paying attention after the real answering carrier has started.
