Argh!! Terminal trouble!

Ok.. here's whats up..

I got an OR-HS, and I got a DEC VT-320 terminal. I figured since the
terminal only draws 50w peak, I'd sit it on the UPS and use it as an
'emergency terminal'... Well, I decided to make a cable rather than
doing interesting other things to work with the original cable.

Well, I found an old single-ended phone cable I made for myself
(attaching to the punchdown block before, all 4 wires are crimped and
everything), took the four data
and checked them on the 25 pair cable. I got a working response with:

yellow on 2
green/red on 7
black on 3

so I looked over the DB-25 specs, and the rj45 plug specs in the
hardware manual for my OR. I then ended up doing this:

black on 3
green on 4
red on 5
yellow on 6

this didn't work, so I decided to flip it around.. THAT DIDN'T WORK
EITHER.

Does anyone know what may be going wrong? I got the OR set in console
mode, and the terminal set to 9600 bps, 8N1 and vt300 decoding.

Thanks
