Management of Rack Mount Modems

I was wondering what other ISP's are using out there to manage rack mount
modems [ ie USR Sporters in a rack]. Areas of interest would be:
1. Method of determining when a modem goes bad, other than
having custy's call;
2. Method of getting stats for modem usage, ie modem on port S0 is busy
60% of the time
