I experimented with this seup for USR modems. The problem with them is that
at some (undefined) point, after plugging in modems to the power transformer,
it becomes impossible to power off the modem via the power switch.

What we're doing now is having our local sheet metal shop create a channel
that goes in a 19" rack, with punches for duplex plugs. It actually turns
out to be cheaper than buying a transformer and wiring all the plugs,
and you only loose 1 modem at a time. Not quites as small a space,
however.
