(PM) PM2e as console server... revisited

I found Tom's excerpt from a (no longer available) document in the list
archives, under the title "Using a PM-2e with a Sun". It was at
/9808/1088.html and I followed it faithfully.

It doesn't seem to be working. Part of it's my inexperience with the PM,
I'm sure, but sheesh, I don't want any of the PM's bells or whistles; I just
want a plain vanilla serial connection from S1 to another arbitrary port --
say, S4. Don't want to run PM daemons on my Suns nor anything of the sort.
Serial in, serial out, thanks and have a nice day.

What's bewildering is that I can add a username and have it come up with
"invalid login", yet turn around and add another one and have it "almost"
work -- it'll connect to the port described in the document, and hang there
just about the way it would if I did a "tip hardwire" to the same machine.
Other users give "No ports available" instead of "invalid login." What is
with this crazy box?
