Calm down. :-)

I think it depends on the volume of modem issues you have. For us,
right now, it's not really an issue. The same modems that we have problems
with are the same ones I see on the USR list. We haven't had to deal
with INIT strings for sometime now - but we do continue to have to tell
some customres to add the comma's. I am just not convinced that as we
grow at a more rapid rate this won't turn into a nightmare.

I've managed and used Ascend Max 4048's, Max TNT's, and the older USR
TC chassis (with the quad modems). The USR was basically a piece of crap
that was unreliable, wouldn't keep its NVRAM, lose d-channels on our PRI
all the time, etc. coupled with the <sarcasm mode on> wonderful <sarcasm
mode off> company policy on support, sales, etc. it was a no-brainer to
NOT use it. No matter how good the modem code was, if it can't stay up
and running the customers are going to be pissed too. However all this
is sometime ago and I am not happy with the rate of progress on the PM3
modem code and we'll most likely start to evaluate the USR again.

What are the major providers using, BTW? I know AOL is all USR and
there are also a lot of Max TNT's out there. Are any of the top 10
providers using Lucent?
