You CAN connect a 56k such as the Supra 56k modem to a pm 2, however, you
will not get 56k service. 56k depends on a DIGITAL line from the CO to the
specific modem. Since a PM 2 does not have built in modems, they are all
connected via a serial port, and typically the modems are connected to the
phone co via pots lines. You COULD do 56k service IF your modem could be
fed a digital line, such as the Courrier I modem or the USR MP 8i or 16i
which are digital modem banks. They have async ports that can be fed into
a PM 2. So you COULD do 56k with a pm 2, but it is up to the modems/modem
bank to be able to connect to a digital line. Typically this is done with
a BRI isdn line (2b+d or 1b+d).

Some modem banks can connect directly to a CT1 as well, but at that point,
you are paying as much for a digital modem bank as you would for an
integrated access server like the PM 3.

The only advantage to going with a pm 2 and a digital modem is cost. You
can get BRI's to feed Courrier I modems 1 at a time as you grow.
