(PM) USR/3com V.90 modems

Has anyone found the magic init string to get the non-working USR/3Com modems
to dial-in to ComOS-3.8b15? We have been running b15 since the first day it
was released on 6 PM3s with NO problems. 100% of our USR V.90 customers were
able to dial-in with no problem and get excelent connect speeds, until today.

We now have our first problem. It's with a new USR/3Com V.90, USB port,
Voice Mail, etc (model number 5605, Code Rev 4.8.163, flash date 4-2-98).
In the past when we've had compatibility issues, with some experimentation
we could discover what piece of code the incompatibility was in and dsable
it. I.e. disable V.42, MNP, or what ever. I've had no such luck with this
particular modem. I checked the archives and only found one previous posting
where someone recommended an init string of AT&F1&I0&N33&U25S15=128, but this
doesn't help. I'm assuming the magic in the above string is the S15=128,
which disables V.42.

I would consider this less of a problem if it were not for the fact that
he CAN get stable V.90 connections with another ISP in our area. I'm not
sure what equipment they are using, but it is a V.90 not X2 connection he
is getting. In our case, it usually fails to connect at all (it doesn't
even get the gong tone, but tries for about a minute to sync). If he does
get a gong tone it connects at a 49.333, but it has slow chopy responses
and it drops connection within minutes.

I don't lay the blam for this on Lucent, USR has always made retarded modems.
If anyone finds a way to break though this or similar problems, please post
it to the list. Even if it doesn't address the problems with this particular
modem, it's always handy to have a list of init strings and ideas to try out.

Thanks,

Joe Brewer
