Once upon a time Al Hopper shaped the electrons to say...
>I'm starting to get inquires from businesses that wish to run VPNs over
>the Internet. I'm PM2/PM3/OR-U based (with Cisco 3640 for backbone
>routing) and I'd like to keep it this way!

Where does the Lucent gear enter into it? At the customer site? Note
that Lucent gear and ROUTE VPNs right now, it is just IP traffic. They
just can't act as endpoints to a tunnel.

>Does Livingston/Lucent have a plan for VPNs? Any kind of a rough
>timetable? I'm trying to avoid purchasing dedicated VPN boxes and

IPIP and L2TP tunneling are in beta now AFAIK. I believe these will be
available on all Lucent PM products.

IPSec secure (encrypted) tunnels are in beta on the PM-3 too AFAIK, but
these require a new HW Accelerator card to handle the encryption overhead.
It goes on where the compression card does today. I'm not sure if it
also does compression or if it an either/or situation.

I expect the PM-4 will also have some form of HW card for Encryption at
some point.

The older units - PM-2/25, IRX, OR - I doubt have the horsepower to do
encryption. It is very processor intensive. But I would think any new
products they produce will at least have an option for adding a coprocessor
for it.

>getting into that headache situation. Is there a solution that I could
>implement now, that would integrate into the planned Livingston VPN
>framework at a later time?

Well, anything that does L2TP, IPIP, or IPSec.

>Another piece of this puzzle will be SSH. This is already very popular
>for encrypted telnet sessions.

I doubt this will happen. It was discussed while I was there, and it was
felt that they'd run into export issues. PMs are sold worldwide, and
many countries don't permit things like SSH - or ANY encryption.
