OTOH, there are compensating benefits. Offering a choice spanning
from bleeding edge to tried'n'true goes over quite well and creates a
positive image of catering to customer needs.

In two of our largest markets, we have three access numbers, one
analog hitting Couriers (MP/16s) on PM2s, one PRI hitting 3.7.2c3, and
one PRI hitting 3.8.b15. I don't expect to dismantle this; in fact
I'm working on adding new numbers in places where we don't now offer a
choice.

I don't think it matters a whole lot what the choice is; just being
able to provide a second or third access number that's different
leaves an impression of going the extra mile. In fact, having people
try a different number was a remarkably effective cure for a lot of
problems even when all the PRI numbers hit identical boxes :)
