(PM) retrains & renegotiates

What is the difference between a Retrain and a Renegotiation? My guess is
that renegotiation is when the modem first starts talking with the other
end and retrains is when it talks after the connection has started, but I
am not sure. Maybe vice versa. The Livingston manual is not too
descriptive in the matter. Thanks.
