The unit tries to transmit and 'collides' with a packet on the ethernet
already.

Oh. no wonder. This is the crappiest of the three over all. But since
you have a shared environment the more units you have on an ethernet,
the more collisions you will get. When a collision happens the unit backs
off, waits, and tries to retransmit.
The best way to eliminate them is to use 10baseT and a switch for a
switched ethernet configuration.
