I haven't followed this thread, but perhaps this will help.

You wouldn't use the IP address of the PM's ethernet port as the gateway
for that PM. Instead, the gateway would be the address of the router of
your upstream provider, or there abouts.

I also found this confusing when I set up my first PM. I'm using a PM3 as
both a K56 term server on one of the T1 ports, and my main router with the
other T1 port. So one would *think* that the IP address of the PM3 becomes
the gateway address. Not so.
