Ethernet actually uses only 4 wires too...it's just a different pinout.
"proper" cable, if you want to make wire that "goes both ways" will have
pairs run as 1+2, 3+6, 4+5, 7+8. This way, you have twisted pairs in both
the ethernet and T1 pinouts.
