(PM) Long phone lines: X2 works, K56Flex doesn't??

Tuesday a new signup (call him Mike) with a Supra 56k and called to
complain he couldn't get a flex connect. MapQuest says he's at the
end of a 15-mile phone line (!), so I gave my spiel about how long
phone lines don't work for 56k so he's SOL.

An hour or so later I got an email from a guy saying he lives across
the street from Mike and connects to his ISP with X2.

This got my attention (!) Neither user was confrontational about it;
they just wanted to get Mike's connection working, and they were
interested enough to try things ... init strings, phone numbers for
padded and unpadded PRIs. After 70 calls they've given up.

Mike's friend just barely gets X2 connects; he says he connects at
only 35000. However, that's still a good deal better than 26400, the
best Mike can manage connecting to us.

Anyway, to get to a bottom line, can anybody say they know they have
users getting flex connections, at any speed, on loaded phone lines
(longer than 3.5 miles)?
