(PM) Acer Flex Modem (family problems)

I have a rather important client (father-in-law! ;) ) who just bought a
kicking new PII-300 with an
Acer FM56PVS Flex modem in it. He can only connect to our PM3 (3.7.2 - PRI)
at 31,200.

I visited the Acer site and DLed the latest driver I could find, nuked the
modem in the control panel and re-installed using the DLed driver. Still
connects at 31,200.

Has anyone had success with this particular modem? I'd really like to prove
that all this money I spent on cool stuff instead of his daughter was
justified. ;)
