I'm saying I *thought* I saw it.. But when the number twig'd in my head it
was already off the screen, and the next one was a meager 51. I don't know
the purpose of NBUFS, but I'm curious about your comment 'sort of defines
the issue'?

loghost is set, but all I get in my syslog is a one liner at boot time.
When the PM locks up, I lose the logout information for anyone who may be
logged on because the PM is tight-solid LOCKED.

Another 'clue'.. Between midnight and 12:10, every evening the PM locks
connections on *most* but not 'all' connected users. The Authenticator keeps
on ticking, but the PM does this. I know, because I am usually on after
midnight and I usually have to hangup and re-dial. I get back on right away
when I re-connect.
I DO NOT have any cron jobs or at jobs scheduled between 11PM & 3AM. So it
can't be my authenticator.
Three days ago we added 5 more modems to our bank. (Now we have 15). It has
locked up two times in the last three days. Much more that previously. But
still, I have seen 14 modems on line and a SHOW MEM still shows just a little
over 1Mb ram used, just under 3Mb free.
