Chris - we have been experiencing the exact same problem at
our cable POP. The PM3 seems to work very well with the old modems but
with the new 56k modems we have no end of trouble. Interestingly the
problem appears for all the world to be modem related, since it only
really appears to affect Rockwell based modems, but all of the
evidence is a bit contradictory, especially now that we have installed
56K modems on another PM3 with another Telco and have very few
problems on that one. What we have in a nutshell is:
- Modems which work fine on one PM3 do not work on the Cable
telco one, which appears to point to a telco problem, BUT
- Modems which do not work with the K56 cards on the cable pop
DO WORK FLAWLESSLY on the SAME PM3 with the SAME TELCO on the SAME PRI
with the SAME ComOS but with the old modems ( did I make that clear
:-) )
- There are no significant PRI errors
- The problems do only seem to affect a certain type of modem
( Rockwell RC288DPi Rev 05BA ).... how does the Telco switch know what
sort of modem is connecting!!
If the above scenario sounds like the one that you have, then
take a little heart. An engineer from Livingston has been to us and
seen this first hand, and we have a modem which we can replicate the
problem 100% and so if they get the right equipment in place they
should be able to see what is happening. They were going to look into
the problem further ( as of last week ) and so there is hope of
finding the solution yet. I too hope, though, that it does not turn
out to be a telco problem because TBH I think this is way over their
heads :-(. Personally I think that this points to a signal tolerance
issue though, possibly in some A/D converter somewhere, which if that
is the case will be a real nightmare......
