Another problem seen with Packard Bells of a certain release date that
causes this is their answering machine application, I believe. You have to
go into the win.ini and remove it from the startup. I have NO idea how
that would prevent DNS requests but IT DID and it was reproduceable and we
had multiple customers there for a few months who had this trouble. I may
have a note somewhere on this if you need me to look it up.
Also, add switches to your tcpdump: -s 128 -vv
to get more printed out - you can see what domain the box is sending that
way - perhaps there'll be a clue.
