(PM) What do you tell users about K56Flex and v.PCM?

I know everyone is still trying to get K56Flex working on a universal
basis. Just to be different, I'm still following up with my telco
regarding the digital padding, but as for my customers (current or future)
I'm taking a proactive approach.

I started thinking that I/we are knocking our heads WAY too much regarding
the K56Flex problems. The modems are at least 100% more expensive than
the 33.6Kbps and the v.PCM consumer models are now right around the
corner. Lucent did mention something about getting v.PCM code ready for a
look-see sometime in Februarch (deliberate munge ;).

As such, I will inform customers that yes we do have K56Flex capability,
but at the moment if they haven't bought a new modem, to wait for the
v.PCM. (WHY?) Mainly, because I'm hoping that the number of times to flash
the modem will decrease dramatically to get a proper 56Kbps connection.
And I won't have to deal with a legacy interim protocol that will
disappear _VERY_ soon!

The cost for such v.PCM modems can only come down with all the marketing
and PR that will have to be ramped up to say "WE ARE v.PCM COMPLIANT!!!"
well, so will everyone else... Thus waiting a few months is only a
win-win situation for me and my clients.

Sure other ISPs may still push K56Flex X2 etc... but what I'm looking for
is the most stable and reliable service I can provide to people. I'd
rather lose the speed freaks, heck they actually cost us more don't they..
;) well depending on your costing for your Internet connection and how
long those IRC and Quake addicts stay on-line.

I'm not giving up the K56Flex vs X2 fight! Far from it, if someone really
needs to be bleeding edge I'll try to provide the connection to K56Flex!
It's just that at this moment and actually since December I've been doing
PR with those that ask about it and what they can get out of it. 90% are
happy with my suggestion to wait the other 10% well.... *shrug* can't
please everyone...

Anyhow, that's my little rant for tonight....

I just needed something to take my mind off of bonk.c and newtear.c
*sigh* which if you haven't heard are the newest DoS utilities to kill
winXX and perhaps linux... (e-mail private if you need more info on these)

Otherwise, best wishes to all, I gotta go sleep ;)
