I heartily disagree! We also have been ticking off our Quakers (me
included) with the pause/dropped connection problem. We've tested both in
Quake, which has NO rate limiting, and in Quakeworld, which DOES allow you
to rate limit the amount of communication between the client-server-client.
Even capping the "rate" down to 2k/sec or 1k/sec, we STILL had the problem.
Dialing into our PM2's at 33.6 and the problem went away, so we did some
research. (For a detailed explaining of our problems, check back about 2+
weeks for a LONG post I put up..) Here's what we've done to MOSTLY correct
the problem... mostly.. Note these are CLIENT side fixes... I WISH there
was a PM3 fix.
#1 - disable V42-bis,LAPM, and go to MNP5, etc. Used "%c1\n5" on Zoom/Supra
modems
#2 - disable IP header compression
These two steps together eliminated 95% of the problems. We still get an
occasional "PAUSE" but at least now most of our connections don't DROP.
Also, we've recently include a step #3, which is "Enable Software
Compression" now that we have a Stacker Card (THANK YOU LE! 1+1=3!!) and
our quake players are VERY happy with that, since it's lowered their
latency considerably.
For what it's worth, 95% of our "beta test" 56k group are Quake players, so
this is VERY important to us, from both a personal and commerical standpoint.
These steps have created a hefty bandaid for the problem, so let's hope
it's solved, like the "admin modems" problem in 3.7.3.
