(PM) 56K DDS and IRX114

I have to run a dedicated circuit to a customer; it's been a while since
I've researched this. We are using the IRX114 and would like to connect it
to a 56k DSU. On the other side, they intend to connect their DSU to a
novell server running a TCP/IP -> IPX gateway. Could anyone recommend an
easy way to perform this, perhaps using rs232 on both ends?

The problem began when I started thinking that v.35 was primarily for T1
connection, and thought that the 56k DSU was going to want rs232. "oh,
yeah, we can hook a 56k DSU right into one of the native comm ports of the
file server (rs232) and likewise, I'll switch my IRX port to rs232". I
also thought that rs232 could do synchronous (It's been a while for me,
but that's what I last understood).

When I got Digital Link on the phone, things changed. They basically told
me that I needed to do synchronous on both ends, and I needed to do v.35
out the back of my DSUs, into an adapter cable that would link up with a
special adapter cable from livingston (db25->winchester->db25). On the
other end, I had to put a synchronous card in the PC or get a v.25 ->
rs232 adapter. They also told me that an rs232 serial port would not
do synchronous. This is beginning to sound kludgy.

Then when I got Adtran on the phone, they told me that they had an rs232
capable DSU, and I had my choice of synchronous or asynchronous. I've been
on the phone with a bunch of companies and I'm getting different answers.

Everyone is saying that because the IRX can do both rs232 and v.35 over
its db25f connector, that the pinouts must be proprietary because the
pinouts overlap. My thinking is that because its switch selectable, the
pinout would be controlled via electronics.

So I guess my questions are:

1. Can I run a 56k DDS leased line into a DSU connected over asynchronous
rs232 (basically like a modem connection) to DTE, or does the line
signalling on the leased line require that I run synchronous?

2. If I must run synchronous, can it be done with the rs232 port on the
IRX (I'll check the manual), and more importantly, can it be done on the
serial port of a PC (never needed to try it).

3. Can one side of the connection have its DSU connected to DTE via
syncronous and the other via asynchronous. I doubt it, but I have to ask
;-).

4. Does anyone have any experience running a leased line directly into a
PC running novell (Intranetware 4.11) that could make recommendations on
the products to use (ie, serial port driver, PPP driver) and perhaps alert
me to any gotchas I might face?
