No flow control or improper flow control will do that, yes, but I find
that if flow control is not enabled, the line disconnects VERY QUICKLY
after establishing anyway.

True... you wont see em.
You WILL get CRC errors, but they will be transparent to the DTE
equipment. I asssume this is what you mean. For example, if you GENERATE
line noise, an MNP connection will slow down, but you wont SEE CRC errors
on any monitoring software UNLESS the MNP is software loaded INTO the DTE
equipment as in the case of the early MNP 5 modems where it was just a
2400 baud modem and the MNP was handled via software. Remember thse
jewels?
