Why is this a surprise? The old modem code has a higher latency. This has
been talked about here many times - just the past couple of days a number
of people have mentioned lower ping times, faster quake response, etc, with
the new cards/code.

The new cards perform better. That was ALWAYS the goal. We always wanted
to at *minimum* do as well as the 'old' cards, and if at all possible,
improve on them.

I don't see that you have any reason to be upset. Would you rather the
new cards DIDN'T perform better? That's how things work - how they SHOULD
work.

I would sure as hell hope that if there is ever a 3rd generation card it
is as good as, if not better than the 'new' cards.
