After reading the above, I think it's a very good point, and well made.
I suspect it wouldn't be all that hard to set a limit on the number of
ports that could use compression. Also I think it would be kind of
embarrassing to tell a customer who bought a PM2I so he got his ISDN
to his ISP over the 1 BRI, and had the other ports for some other
user dial-ups to the office (or other possible future expansions) that
Compression will not work, but if he had gotten that OR-U instead that
NOW we could help increase the performance of his link. Kinda sad for
the PM2, when the OR-U can actually do more. The compression code
is already present, so I am sure it's just the matter of changing the
way it's locked out.
Even if you limited the compression to 2 channels (1 BRI), you would
at least be offering the exact same options to the PM2E/I user that
you are providing to the OR-U user. I think this would really comfort
a lot of PM2 owners that just can't justify getting a PM3 at this time.
I know of 2 clients now that would just love me to death if I could
offer compression on just the one BRI they use to connect with us..
Please consider this option...
