well, if done correctly you can actually fit the ENTIRE 32 bit IP address
space in 16MB of RAM. Think about it, you really only need 24 bits,
nobody routes anything smaller than a Class C, except for local routes and
then that is only a few networks. 2^24 = 16 MB with 8 bits per network
which means 256 ports on the router. BGP eats so much RAM because it
keeps the ASN list for each route. If you don't re-transmit routes (which
you would NOT want to do) there is no reason for a end-point router to
keep the ASN list for each route. Then looking up a route is just a
memory lookup to find out what port it should send it out on.

I think the PM-3 is limited to 32 MB but that may be a ComOS thing and not
a hardware thing. The CPU can handle it.

IMHO Livingston rules in the PPP dialup market and Cisco is the one to
beat in the routing market.

Livingston will need to come up with a redundant solution for hardware in
order to compete with Cisco in the 7xxx + range.
