stupid question about PAP

Ok...
I'm stumped... I probably just don't understand what it is I'm doing, which
is usually the case....

I am the ISP, I'm supposed to have all the answers, right?

I am running LIvingston PM2e30's, and they work perfectly with Windows 3.1,
Windows95, and MAC stuff, also with Windows NT stuff....

New problem:
I have my own Linux box to use from home, wrote the chat script and
everything (even looked at the linux ppp howto many moons ago). The box
connects, but at no point will it authenticate using PAP. I cannot figure
out what the PAP secret is on the portmasters, nor do I know how to set it.
(Manuals are in the office, and I'll read them on Monday)

So I tried rewriting the chat script so it would enter the username and
password to authenticate that way... seemed like a reasonable solution to
me... the machine never authenticates against radius.

PMWHO shows a user connecting, but never PPP or a username.

I just got an email from a customer who wants to know how to hook up his
newly-built slackware box up..... so my need to answer this becomes a bit
more urgent... (like 2-3 days to get a definitive answer).

Questions:
In the PAP-Secrets file on the linux box, what do I use for the secret of
the portmaster? (or am I totally nuts and/or stupid?)

Even without PAP, why won't the box authenticate by providing its username
and password?

any ideas?

thanks in advance
