Once upon a time david shaped the electrons to say...
>Situation: we have an irx-211. The t1 port at S1 connects to our
>upstream ISP. This works just fine. We want to add a WAN connection on
>another t1 at S2.

I presume you meean an IRX-112. The 211 is the firewall with 2 ether, and
1 WAN.

>What I *think* I need to do is assign an IP number to the S2 interface

PPP? You can do it a lot simpler with PPP unnumbered. And without knowing
all of the network numbering, it is hard to troubleshoot. You're using a
subnet here - is the rest used someplace else? Does the entire network
have the same netmasK? etc.

Without seeing your routes this is impossible to troubleshoot really.
But it is unusual to traceroute to a local interface. Have you tried
a traceroute to .18?

>irx1> add route 206.199.203.0 206.199.202.18 1
>Warning: Gateway is not directly connected - marking as Unknown
>New route entry successfully added

Right. The connection is not up, therefore .18 is not reachable. THere is
no route to .18, hence this error.

You need to get the link ESTABLISHED before routing is even a concern.
Since the link is not established. the problem is you port config on this
end or the other. Routing doesn't enter into the picture until the link
is up.

>A traceroute to anything within the new class C likewise wants to go to
>my default route.

Right. Until the link is up there is no route.
