Old, outdated, and a poor performer. Look at those field tests and
reviews - performace on the 4000 falls of dramatically as load increases.
It is worse than the 4002/4004 - which has received less than glowing
reviews recently.
And, read the Ascend users list, the Max is still plagued with frequent
code revisions and bugs. In other words, the fact it has been out so
long seems to count for nothing.
