IRX static route for a subnet?

On the IRX-114's here in the past I've just used whole Class C's for
customers. Today I started setting up a 16 host subnet (255.255.255.240)
for a leased line customer.

I'm using 194.46.17.16 as the network, 194.46.17.31 as the broadcast,
194.46.17.30 for the farside router and 194.46.17.17-29 for customer
computers.

I did the following on the IRX:

set s4 dest 194.46.17.30 255.255.255.240
add route 194.46.17.16 194.46.17.30 1
reset s4

which I would have expected to work. However I could only ping the far
router (194.46.17.30). Also "show route" had the following

194.46.17.30 194.46.17.30 HL 1 ptp4

One one occasion it showed:

194.46.17.30 194.46.17.30 HLC 1 ptp4

When I deleted the subnet route (del route 194.46.30.17) and added a
route for the whole Class C (add route 194.46.17.0 194.46.17.30 1)
everything worked.

Why? How do I get a static subnet route to work?
