This problem has existed since the 0.9 releases of Linux, but I have found
one reliable way to fix the '5-minute delay' bugs in inetd and ttymon...

Dump Linux and install the latest free [Net|Free|Open]BSD system.

Actually, I have to confess that we have licenses for all the commercial
AT&T based system-V Unix systems, from SVR4x86 through Unixware, Solaris and
the latest overpriced release from SCO, and I prefer them over the free
Unix/Unixlike systems.

Under some criteria, you do get what you pay for.
