and a radius server, and a login server, mail server, and a news
server, and... need I say more?

On my extreme tests... a 4 meg i386SX/16..

booting Linux: 15 minutes
at login prompt to get a bash prompt: 5 minutes (post user/pass)

(4 megs 70ns ram, Intel 386SX/16, 345 Mb Maxtor IDE)

Booting FreeBSD: 1 minute 20 seconds
at login prompt to get a tcsh prompt: 4 seconds (post user/pass)

(4 megs 70ns ram, Intel 386SX/16, 345 Mb Maxtor IDE)

I haven't had problems with kernel panic in Linux, but many of my
friends have, but my friends have a way of doing sick things like
putting a Cyrix 6x86 CPU on an Intel Triton motherboard (yeeech, Opti
Viper all the way) and the like.

I'm currently seriously considering putting up a linux box here, just
to screw around with. I've been told it makes a nice X-terminal,
plus it has native support for a lot of games (xquake, xdoom, etc),
which I think is great...

I know I have appeared to be a bit rash on this list before, and I
have been missing the point of the whole thing.... its not what you
run, its just the fact that there is FREE UNIX. Commercial grade
unix operating systems downloadable from hundreds of FTP sites
worldwide.

This kind of thing is what brought the internet from being a
7-mainframe network to what it is today, and we need to make sure the
spirit of the industry is going to stay that way.

P.S. - for all you insane FreeBSD people, I will shortly be making an
announcement about a new, slightly changed, implimentation of
pppgetty that makes it so you don't have to boot single-user or
modify existing files, and works flawlessly. I did it here, and it
works great...
