PM2 MAC Addresses?

I've just completed upgrading about 45 PM2's and PM2E's including;
a. upgrading the eprom from "B" to "M",
b. upgrading RAM from 1 meg to 4 meg, and,
c. upgrading ComOS from mostly 2.4 to 3.3.2c1
Most were upgraded by replacing the production box with a spare
PM2 and re-entering the configuration data and tables. The
majority of the upgrades started with clearing all nvram 'after'
running the box at 3.3.2c1. The eprom chips each had a different
MAC address on the label starting with "00:C0:05..."

After upgrading, some PM2's still reflected the older "00:80:AD..."
MAC address while others reflected the labeled "00:C0:05..." address.
A couple of the boxes switched MAC addresses within minutes after
rebooting. The MAC addresses were verified via "show ether0" and
on other ethernet attached systems.

Any ideas on what's happening?
