for what it is worth. . .not for sure understanding what you are calling a
"lockup", we too use BSDI 1.1, which is also our radius server, runing 1.6
radius, and have found our radius server "asleep" from time to time, when
we looked into it, we found that the NIC card had gone to sleep, an
ifconfig was showing it up, running, routing, etc. . .but not so. . .we
did an ifconfig on the port, and it woke back up. . .my fix for now (if
this is even related to this thread) is a cron job polling the port every
hour and doing an ifconfig, all if fine since. . .

Out of curiosity, what kind of uplink do you have and what type of router
is at the other end? You aren't the only one with this kind of problem,
and so far the only thing in common between all of us that have this
happen is that a Portmaster is involved.
