It's funny that I hear that too since we use nothing but USR sportser's here.
It really all depends on whether or not you can get the correct init string
for a name brand modem (not the el cheapo $50 ones). If you get ZOOM, or
Practical Peripherals, or Supra's 9 times out of 10, they won't work, but it's
either because the ROM is too outdated or because you don't have the proper
init string.
