I've used pminstall on 2.4 before. (pm2_3.1_sun4.tar)
It gets stuck on the password prompt. I hit control-Z to stop it, "fg"
it, and type in the password. Annoying, but it works. I've only tried
using it to upgrade a Portmaster's flash.
