Using WINS (NT) Server Resources - UDP/IP NetBIOS

Updated: August 20, 1999

SUMMARY: If your customers need NetBIOS over IP and need access to shared resources (e.g printers and servers) via the "Network Neighborhood" in Windows 95/98.

SOLUTION: Accessing and Browsing WINS (NT) Server resources for dial-in Windows 95/98 users by following these simple instructions:

  1. Configure an NT Server as a 'master' Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) Server on the local area network (LAN) where a dial-in PortMaster is also connected. The WINS Server does not need to be on the very same LAN, but no more than two hops.
    1. Estimated configuration times are 1 hour for the WINS server and 10 minutes per PC. With the following simple guideline, most users can quickly configure their PC.
  2. Windows 95/98 Dialup Client Configuration (Static WINS Server):
    1. Open 'Control Panel'
    2. Select 'Network'
    3. Select 'TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter' and open properties.
    4. Select the WINS configuration tab
    5. Click on Enable WINS Resolution
    6. Enter the IP address of the Primary WINS Server (static config!)
    7. Enter the IP address of the Secondary WINS Server - optional
  3. Windows WINS Server Configuration:
    1. This is the responsibility of the user or contracted organization.
