Using WINS (NT) Server Resources - UDP/IP NetBIOS
Updated: August 20, 1999
SUMMARY: If your customers need NetBIOS over IP and need access to shared resources
(e.g printers and servers) via the "Network Neighborhood" in Windows
95/98.
SOLUTION: Accessing and Browsing WINS (NT) Server resources for dial-in Windows
95/98 users by following these simple instructions:
- Configure an NT Server as a 'master' Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) Server on the
local area network (LAN) where a dial-in PortMaster is also connected. The WINS Server
does not need to be on the very same LAN, but no more than two hops.
- Estimated configuration times are 1 hour for the WINS server and 10 minutes per PC. With
the following simple guideline, most users can quickly configure their PC.
- Windows 95/98 Dialup Client Configuration (Static WINS Server):
- Open 'Control Panel'
- Select 'Network'
- Select 'TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter' and open properties.
- Select the WINS configuration tab
- Click on Enable WINS Resolution
- Enter the IP address of the Primary WINS Server (static config!)
- Enter the IP address of the Secondary WINS Server - optional
- Windows WINS Server Configuration:
- This is the responsibility of the user or contracted organization.
