Logging a PPP Negotiation from Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking
Date: August 20, 1999
DESCRIPTION:
In some troubleshooting situations, you might need to examine the PPP negotiation phase of
a dial-up networking (DUN) session. A trace log reveals any negotiation failures or
incompatibility issues that must be resolved with Microsoft or the network access server
manufacturer.
To enable PPP tracing on Microsoft Windows 95:
- Do one of the following:
- Click My Computer on your desktop.
- Click the Start menu button and select Settings.
- Click the Control Panel icon.
- Click the Network icon.
- Click the Dial-Up Adapter network component (the green ISA card icon).
- Click the Properties button.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Change the "Record a log file" property from NO to YES via the pull-down menu.
- Click OK to exit the Adapter Properties window.
- Click OK again to exit the Network window and save the new setting.
- Restart your computer for this change to take effect.
The log file ppplog.txt resulting from the next PPP negotiation will be located in your
\WINDOWS directory. This file will contain all PPP trace information on the activity of
the following protocols:
- Link Control Protocol (LCP)
- Network Control Protocol (NCP)
- IP Control Protocol (IPCP)
- IPX Control Protocol (IPXCP)
